Crowns & Bridges
We are fortunate that modern dentistry offers so many ways to help patients keep all their teeth for as long as possible. Today, dentists like Dr. John Murfree can restore function to broken or missing teeth that were once thought to be damaged beyond repair.
With porcelain crowns and bridges at our Murfreesboro dental office, we can give new life to your smile. Both are dental restorations that return function to your smile so you can chew without pain and feel confident about your appearance again.
Crowns and Bridges and Why We Recommend Them
Crowns and bridges are such widely used restorations that everyone either has or knows someone who has one. Dr. Murfree’s extensive experience in prosthodontics and eye for detail allows him to design and fabricate crowns and bridges that exceed his patients’ expectations every time.
A ceramic dental crown is designed in the shape of a tooth and slips over an existing tooth. The crown protects a compromised tooth from further damage by providing a strong new surface that absorbs chewing forces.
There are many different situations where Dr. Murfree would recommend a dental crown for our Murfreesboro patients:
- A cavity that’s too large for a filling
- A broken tooth that needs additional support
- A dental implant and need to restore function
- A dental bridge needs crowns to support it
- A tooth needs support and protection after a root canal
Getting a dental crown takes place over two appointments spread about 2-3 weeks apart. During the first, we prepare the tooth, take impressions, and color match the shade for your new crown. We then send your case off to a custom dental lab where skilled ceramicists fabricate your crown to our specifications.
When it is ready, you’ll come back to our Murfreesboro dental office, and we will adjust it for fit, polish it, and cement it securely to the tooth.
We recommend that you always replace a missing tooth as soon as possible to protect your long-term oral health. We have many tooth replacement options at Murfree Dental, and one of the most popular is dental bridges.
A dental bridge is appropriate when you are missing one or two teeth in a row. The bridge spans the open space between the missing teeth, placing one or two artificial teeth in the gap, and attaching them to adjacent teeth for support.
Bridges are successful when the anchor teeth on either side are healthy enough to support the unit. If they are not, Dr. Murfree will explain other tooth replacement options available to you, including a partial denture or dental implant.
